Beautiful in Black: Conversation with Suicide Narrative/Nonfiction It is finally completed and it is now released. Coming from the heart, an innocent story of honoring life in face of adversity. Growing up in Israel, challenging life hardships, coming to American to fulfill The desire to be accepted loved and free. Author Sara Shai says: True, I have been writing this on and off for the last 35 years. Many times I was not sure I wanted to have my life as an open book, but the thought that my story could make a difference in somebodys life made it possible for me to persevere. The also book focuses on the taboo issue of suicide and the effect of suicide on those who are left behind. My husband, Dan Tavor, a noted Israeli journalist, committed suicide in December of 1970 and left those who knew him in shock and disbelief. As for myself, I entered a world of uncertainty and confusion. A widow at the age of 24, I had to deal not only with my loss, but also the shame, blame and guilt of his suicide. Consequently, I was determined to start over, to prevail over lifes challenges and to triumph. But often I was overwhelmed by memories of my past. I realized that my secret kept me hostage, and the only way out was to confront the matter head on.Writing and rewriting the book was my way of coming to emotional completion. In the process of my healing, I learned that my story is not a rare one.The number of suicides in the USA is higher then the number of homicides.Every day in America alone, 80 people kill themselves and 1500 attempt to do so. It is a silent epidemic. No one wants talk about it. (In the past, I sometimes lied when I was asked how did my husband died.) I kept silent for 35 years. There are millions of people like me. They dont talk; they live in a world of guilt and shame.Suicide is a dreadful word. Those who think about it and wish to stop the pain, rather die than seek help. Those who left behind, rather lie than share their stories. Sara Shais journey to prevail over life challenges will touch and inspire the uncharted realms of your heart. The release of Beautiful In Black was her catalyst to create The Honoring Life Event. Its purpose to increase awareness, Remove all stigmas and empower people to transform tragedy into a life opportunity. The light at the end of the tunnel is always on! On Race

Responsive image
Genre: Philosophy
Author: George Yancy
Release: 2017-09-15
Format Book: PDF, ePUB & Audiobooks
Pages: 408
ISBN-10: 9780190498559

With the recent barrage of racially motivated killings, violent encounters between blacks and whites, and hate crimes in the wake of the 2016 election that foreground historic problems posed by systemic racism, including disenfranchisement and mass incarceration, it would be easy to despair that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream has turned into a nightmare. Many Americans struggle for equal treatment, facing hate speech, brutality, and a national spirit of hopelessness; their reality is hardly "post-racial." The need for clarity surrounding the significance of race and racism in the United States is more pressing than ever. This collection of interviews on race, some originally conducted for The New York Times philosophy blog, The Stone, provides rich context and insight into the nature, challenges, and deepest questions surrounding this fraught and thorny topic. In interviews with such major thinkers as bell hooks, Judith Butler, Cornel West, Kwame Anthony Appiah, Peter Singer, and Noam Chomsky, Yancy probes the historical origins, social constructions, and lived reality of race along political and economic lines. He interrogates fully race's insidious expressions, its transcendence of Black/white binaries, and its link to neo-liberalism, its epistemological and ethical implications, and, ultimately, its future.

Musical Landscapes In Color

Responsive image
Genre: Music
Author: Bill Banfield
Release: 2004-09-01
Format Book: PDF, ePUB & Audiobooks
Pages: 400
ISBN-10: 9780585464169

A sequel to the award-winning The Black Composer Speaks (Scarecrow Press, 1978), this exploration of the creative world of African American composers traces the lives and careers of 40 talented individuals and, in their own words, provides perspectives on a world that has been slow to recognize their remarkable contributions to classical music. The discussion places the music of these composers within the greater context of Western art music, but analyzes it through the lenses of sociology, Western concepts of art and taste, and vernacular musical forms, including spirituals, blues, jazz, and contemporary popular music. Each chapter is devoted to an individual composer, who discusses his or her musical training, compositional techniques and style, and the composer's personal philosophy as reflected in his or her music. A selected list of compositions for each composer is included, as well as a photo and sample of the composer's "hand." Banfield offers unprecedented insight into the history and influence of the African American composer with this documentary, which will appeal to everyone from the music scholar to the general reader.

Genre: History
Author: Phyllis Leffler
Release: 2014-12-04
Format Book: PDF, ePUB & Audiobooks
Pages: 368

Drawing on a wealth of oral interviews collected by activist and politician Julian Bond and historian Phyllis Leffler, Black Leaders on Leadership uses the lives of prominent African Americans from all sectors of society to trace the contours of Black leadership in America. Included here are fascinating accounts from a wide variety of figures such as John Lewis, Clarence Thomas, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Vernon Jordan, Angela Davis, Amiri Baraka, and many more. Stories of identity are foregrounded here - stories about the self, about group and community, about value and meaning. These individual and collective memories form a genealogy of social and cultural identity, demonstrating how leadership emerges from historical struggle rooted in the promise of a brighter future, and providing valuable insights into the intractable disparities of race in America. A website -http://www.blackleadership.virginia.edu - hosts the complete interviews, is fully searchable by topic, and allows the voices and the faces of those interviewed to come alive on the pages of the book through the use of QR codes. Educators will also find seven leadership lessons for use in classrooms on the website and a full glossary of terms in both printed and electronic formats.

The classic, bestselling book on the psychology of racism-now fully revised and updated Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black, White, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is this self-segregation a problem to address or a coping strategy? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, argues that straight talk about our racial identities is essential if we are serious about enabling communication across racial and ethnic divides. These topics have only become more urgent as the national conversation about race is increasingly acrimonious. This fully revised edition is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of race in America. "An unusually sensitive work about the racial barriers that still divide us in so many areas of life."--Jonathan Kozol

Conversations With A Dead Man

Responsive image
Genre: Biography & Autobiography
Author: Mark Abley
Release: 2013-10-11
Format Book: PDF, ePUB & Audiobooks
Pages: 256
ISBN-10: 9781771620086

As a poet and citizen deeply concerned by the Oka Crisis, the Idle No More protests, and Canada’s ongoing failure to resolve First Nations issues, Montreal author Mark Abley has long been haunted by the figure of Duncan Campbell Scott, known both as the architect of Canada’s most destructive Aboriginal policies and as one of the nation’s major poets. Who was this enigmatic figure who could compose a sonnet to an “Onondaga Madonna” one moment and promote a “final solution” to the “Indian problem” the next? In this passionate, intelligent and highly readable inquiry into the state of Canada’s troubled Aboriginal relations, Abley alternates between analysis of current events and an imagined debate with the spirit of Duncan Campbell Scott, whose defense of the Indian Residential School and belief in assimilation illuminate the historical roots underlying today’s First Nations’ struggles.
